Madurai

It is narrated in legend that Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. One day, a farmer named Dhananjaya who was passing through the forest, saw Indra (The king of the gods), worshipping a swayambhu (self created Lingam ) under kadamba tree. Dhananjaya, the farmer immediately reported this to King Kulasekara Pandya. Kulasekara Pandya cleared the forest and built a temple around the Lingam. A city was soon planned with the temple as its centre. On the day the city was to be named, Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on the town. So, the place was named Madurai - mathuram meaning "sweetness" in Tamil.

Hindutva leaders plan to meet Jayalalithaa

Leaders of RSS, BJP, Hindu Munnani and other Hindu outfits plan to meet Chief Minister over the murders of Hindutva leaders in quick succession in Tamil Nadu, BJP leader L. Ganesan said.
Meeting reporters before attending memorial programme for the slain Hindu Munnani State secretary Vellaiyappan here on Sunday he said “We plan to give a letter seeking approval to meet CM. We hope she will meet us”.
He said that the slain Hindutva leaders including Vellaiyappan and Ramesh had no personal enmity or property dispute or family feuds that led to their murder. “They worked for the nation and the Hindu society. That is the reason why they have been killed by the antinationals,” he said.
He termed the successive murders as failure of state. “It is shameful that political leaders have to live with fear in the state. It would be even more shameful if the leaders were not given adequate security knowing well that they live in danger,” Mr.Ganesan added.
“After these murders youngsters belonging to Hindu organizations are waiting like a volcano waiting to erupt. If they started taking some other path nobody can prevent them. Only to channelize their anger we organize bandh and demonstrations. Hence people of Tamil Nadu should support these protests. Our cadres would not come asking to shut the doors of business establishments. But I request people to voluntarily close their establishments to show protest against these killings,” Mr.Ganesan said.
Mr.Ganesan said Ramesh had threat from the terrorists since he was a strong organiser whom he would call “western threshold”.
Reporters pointed out that if these murders had any terrorist link, the Central intelligence agencies should have had a clue. They asked him whether he had any clue, he said that law and order was a State subject and hence they could not question the Centre much. He suggested formation of federal police to deal with criminals who transit into other States after committing crime in one State.
When asked why they are not suspecting that there could be other angles to the murders than religious terrorism, he said that modus operandi of these murders was suggestive of that kind of terrorism.

Hindu Munnani leader Rama Gopalan participated in the demonstration condemning Vellaiyappan’s murder, which was staged in front of the head post office in the evening.
