Dermatologist Greg Goodman explains, "The skin’s barrier function and health are reliant on the cohesive attachment of the bricks comprising the outer layer skin cells and the mortar between them. The bricks contain the natural moisturising factors of the skin with the mortar (which is made up of oils) being crucial in how and when the skin cells turn over,” he explains. “It’s the oil in the skin that makes it behave in a cohesive healthy manner and supply the skin with its barrier function and control over its water balance with the outside world.”
