The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday allowed DMDK president A. Vijayakant’s petition and modified the conditions imposed on him while granting him anticipatory bail.
Justice R. Mala directed the DMDK leader to pay a bond of Rs. 10,000 in the Judicial Magistrate (I) Court in Madurai within 15 days.
The court had earlier asked him to pay the bond in the Judicial Magistrate Court in Nagercoil.
Relaxing the conditions, the judge directed Mr. Vijayakant to appear before the Kottar police in Kanyakumari district, whenever required.
The anticipatory bail order had asked him to appear before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Chennai every day.
Senior counsel M. Ajmal Khan, who appeared for Mr. Vijayakant, contended that there were 23 cases pending against the DMDK leader all over the State. The State had foisted all these cases with ‘a malafide intention,’ he argued.
Mr Vijayakant had obtained the anticipatory bail in a case registered against him by the Kottar police on July 14, after he allegedly assaulted a public prosecutor in Nagercoil on July 1.
