Stating that two persons were killed in firing by central armed police forces during the third and fourth phases of polling in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress on Monday asked who would take responsibility.
“The Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Bharatiya Janata Party, and sadly, the Court and the State Election Commission all wanted the Central security forces for the rural polls. Now since two persons have been killed in firing by the forces, who will take responsibility for the deaths,” Trinamool leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Derek O’ Brien, said at the State party headquarters.
While one person was killed when security personnel opened fire after an altercation with voters at a polling booth in Rathua in Malda district, central forces opened fire outside a polling booth in Joynagar in South 24 Parganas district on July 19, killing a voter.
The government had repeatedly argued that the State police forces were sufficient to hold the rural polls, Mr. O’Brien said.
