Two persons, including the prime accused in the gang rape and murder of a college girl at Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district, moved a district court on Monday alleging that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had forced them to confess to the crime.
Saiful Ali and Bhola Naskar, who approached the court during the day, were arrested on June 8 — the day the alleged incident occurred.
The charge sheet, with their confessional statements, was submitted in the court on June 28. Mr. Ali had been named the prime accused.
The court asked why the CID had not approached it to declare Rafiqul Gazi alias Rafique, an accused in the case who is absconding, a proclaimed offender. It had earlier criticised the CID for submitting an incomplete charge sheet.
WBHRC to record statements
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) asked the victim’s brother, the headmaster of the local primary school Pradip Mukherjee and villagers Tumpa Koyal and Mousami Koyal who had protested against the incident and faced the ire of the State government to appear before the Commission on July 29.
