Madurai

It is narrated in legend that Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. One day, a farmer named Dhananjaya who was passing through the forest, saw Indra (The king of the gods), worshipping a swayambhu (self created Lingam ) under kadamba tree. Dhananjaya, the farmer immediately reported this to King Kulasekara Pandya. Kulasekara Pandya cleared the forest and built a temple around the Lingam. A city was soon planned with the temple as its centre. On the day the city was to be named, Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on the town. So, the place was named Madurai - mathuram meaning "sweetness" in Tamil.

Vijayakant moves HC to modify anticipatory bail conditions

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 23 July 2013 | 21:44

DMDK leader A. Vijayakant has filed a petition in the Madras High Court Bench here to modify the conditions imposed on him in his anticipatory bail. The court granted conditional anticipatory bail to Mr Vijayakant on July 14 in a case registered against him by the Kottar police in Kanyakumari district, after he allegedly assaulted a public prosecutor in Nagercoil on July 1.
In her order, Justice R. Mala had directed the DMDK leader to appear before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) in Chennai every day. If he did not appear before the CMM within 15 days of the issuance of order, his anticipatory bail would stand dismissed, she had ruled.
In his petition filed to modify the conditions, Mr. Vijayakant requested the court to permit him to appear before the Kottar Police whenever required. His counsel R. Gandhi contended that there were 23 cases pending against Mr. Vijayakant across the State. He had been directed to appear before various courts in the State till September 11, 2013, the counsel contended.
According to the counsel, because of the condition imposed by the court the petitioner was not able to move out of Chennai and appear before the courts concerned in other cases. Besides, being the leader of opposition, the petitioner has to travel all over the State to meet people and attend party functions as the parliamentary elections were approaching, he added.
The counsel alleged that several false cases were foisted against Mr Vijayakant to ‘stifle his voice against the government’. Justice R. Mala posted the case to June 25 for further hearing on the request of the government advocate.
