Madurai

It is narrated in legend that Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. One day, a farmer named Dhananjaya who was passing through the forest, saw Indra (The king of the gods), worshipping a swayambhu (self created Lingam ) under kadamba tree. Dhananjaya, the farmer immediately reported this to King Kulasekara Pandya. Kulasekara Pandya cleared the forest and built a temple around the Lingam. A city was soon planned with the temple as its centre. On the day the city was to be named, Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on the town. So, the place was named Madurai - mathuram meaning "sweetness" in Tamil.

Murshidabad: Panchayat elections in Bengal, now underway, are stained with violence.

Today is the fourth of the five phases of voting. The areas that are most tense are Murshidabad and Birbhum districts of the state as over one crore people vote for local governments.

A leader from Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress  publicly threatened on Sunday to behead a rival from the Congress party.

"Bapi Dutta, it would not take me even a minute to behead you," shouted Monirul Islam, a state legislator, at an election rally in the Birbhum district.

Last week, another politician from the Trinamool had asked party workers to attack the houses of independent candidates and hurl bombs at police men.

The threat was directed at Bapi Dutta, a Congress leader of Birbhum district.

In Birbhum, the bodies of two CPM supporters were found this morning. An independent candidate's father was shot at in the same district and has been moved to a hospital in Kolkata. Bombings have been reported in the Murshidabad district.

Yesterday, three people were killed in Murshidabad in poll related violence. All 4,935 polling booths in the district have been declared highly sensitive.
