Members of Maamannar Thirumalai Naicker Samooga Nala Sangam here have appealed to the State government to stop demolishing Rani Mangammal Palace, the heritage building in North Avani Moola Street near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
In a press release, the forum expressed its concern over the demolition of the old building by some individuals. The Corporation authorities should take a stern action against those behind the demolition act by which they had not only defamed Rani Mangammal but also brought shame to Maduai residents.
At a time when there have been appeals to preserve heritage buildings and awareness programmes are conducted to this effect, report of the demolition had come as rude shock.
The government had the responsibility to preserve structures that reveal the history to the future generations. The government should direct the police to register a case against those who were behind the demolition, forum president T. Radhakrishnan said in the statement and threatened to stage demonstrations if there was no tangible action.
In another release, members of Mammannar Thirumalai Naicker Naidu-Naicker Mahajana Sangam, K. Pudur, expressed concern over demolition of the bulding.
The building was built in 1689.
