Madurai

It is narrated in legend that Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. One day, a farmer named Dhananjaya who was passing through the forest, saw Indra (The king of the gods), worshipping a swayambhu (self created Lingam ) under kadamba tree. Dhananjaya, the farmer immediately reported this to King Kulasekara Pandya. Kulasekara Pandya cleared the forest and built a temple around the Lingam. A city was soon planned with the temple as its centre. On the day the city was to be named, Lord Shiva is said to have appeared and drops of nectar from his hair fell on the town. So, the place was named Madurai - mathuram meaning "sweetness" in Tamil.

BJP says ‘no’ to Hyderabad as UT

Written By Unknown on Sunday 21 July 2013 | 22:54

BJP national vice-president Bandaru Dattatreya on Sunday asserted that any proposal to declare Hyderabad as a Union Territory was not acceptable to his party.
At a press conference here, he said there was no change in the BJP stand of carving out a Telangana State with 10 districts, including Hyderabad.
It was also not in favour of Rayala-Telangana and pointed out that the party always supported the creation of smaller States for administrative convenience.
Asked what would be BJP’s stand if the UPA Government introduced a Bill for creation of Rayala-Telangana in Parliament, he quipped it was a hypothetical question.
“We will see. The party will decide. BJP will give a fitting reply then. Nobody can believe the Congress. They are using all types of cards for political purpose”, he added.
Mr. Dattatreya condemned the statement of Majlis- Ittehadul- Muslimeen (MIM) leader Asaddudin Owaisi that his party was opposed to creation of Telangana because BJP would get strengthened.
Majlis was a pawn in Congress strategy on Telangana issue, he added.
The BJP leader expressed concern over the flow of money and liquor in the Panchayat elections.
