A strategy document to tackle dengue will be prepared by the Centre for Research in Medical Entomology (CRME).
The CRME, which functions under the aegis of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), plans to come out with recommendations for prevention, control and treatment of dengue.
In this regard, it is hosting a national conference in Madurai on ‘Dengue scenario in India: disease burden, surveillance and control’, on July 25 and 26.
“Our objective is to deliberate on the dengue threat. We need to be prepared for any outbreak and at the same time it is essential to take control measures for this vector-borne disease,” said B. K.Tyagi, Director, CRME.
He told The Hindu on Sunday that the recommendations coming out of the deliberations at the conference would be submitted to the ICMR, Union Health Ministry, State Health Department and the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme unit.
Experts from Central and State Governments, research institutions, universities, medical colleges and voluntary organisations have been invited for the conference.
Analysis
Dr.Tyagi said that an effective strategy could be evolved for dengue management only after analysing specific case studies such as the massive outbreak of dengue fever in Tamil Nadu last year.
“We will have to share our knowledge and expertise in vector control. Since people died of dengue last season, it is essential for us to be prepared since Tamil Nadu is highly endemic,” he added.
